Beck is back after a long stretch away from new music, and the title track from his upcoming album, “Ride Lonesome,” has become one of the most anticipated alt-rock releases of the year as the full record lands on September 18 through Capitol Records.

Few artists have shifted shape as consistently as Beck across his career, moving fluidly between lo-fi folk, funk, electronic experimentation, and lush orchestral songwriting without ever losing his identity. “Ride Lonesome” marks his fifteenth studio album and his first collection of entirely new material since 2019’s Grammy winning Hyperspace, closing his longest gap between records. For this project, he returned to a more intimate, reflective sound closer to the atmosphere of beloved albums like Sea Change and Morning Phase.

The title track sets that tone immediately. It is a melancholy, slow burning song built around themes of solitude and moving forward through difficulty, and much of its emotional pull comes from who Beck brought back into the room. He reunited with longtime collaborators Smokey Hormel, Joey Waronker, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Jason Falkner, the same musicians behind his most celebrated introspective records, with mixing once again handled by longtime collaborator Nigel Godrich. The result is a warm, understated arrangement that gives Beck’s voice plenty of room to sit with the song’s quieter emotional weight.

The song’s momentum has been building for months. It arrived back in April alongside a surprise tour announcement, and its release quickly drew comparisons to Beck’s more introspective past work, with critics noting it as a welcome return for fans who missed that sound. With the tour now underway and the full album finally arriving, the title track has become the clearest signal yet of the direction Beck has taken after seven years away from new material.

MusicPorta says: “Ride Lonesome” is a graceful, patient piece of songwriting that rewards close listening. Beck’s vocal restraint here says as much as any lyric, and the reunited band brings a warmth and chemistry that only comes from decades of shared history. It’s a quietly powerful return from one of alt-rock’s most restless innovators.
