No specific viral clip or chart event confirmed for this one, so the piece leans on the song’s verified detail (Congolese guitar influence from Piccolo) and its steady TikTok presence.

Oliver De Coque’s “Identity” Still Resonates Through Its Signature Guitar Sound

Oliver De Coque’s “Identity” continues to circulate among highlife fans, turning up regularly on TikTok and still drawing listeners back to the late icon’s catalog decades after the song first established itself as one of his signature tracks.

Born Oliver Sunday Akanite in Ezinifite, Anambra State, De Coque earned a reputation as the King of Highlife Music, known for a guitar style shaped early in his career by Congolese guitarist Piccolo. That influence became central to his sound, and “Identity” stands as one of the clearest showcases of it, blending his distinctive guitar technique with the Igbo rhythmic foundation that ran through his entire catalog.

The track leans on De Coque’s intricate, melodic guitar playing layered over traditional highlife percussion, giving it a rich, textured sound built as much around instrumental interplay as vocal delivery. Thematically, the song reflects on self-awareness, cultural pride and staying true to one’s roots, using plainspoken storytelling and traditional wisdom to make its point. The result feels both personal and proverbial, a style that defined much of De Coque’s songwriting.

There is no confirmed viral clip or chart milestone behind the song’s current attention. Its pull instead comes from its place as one of De Coque’s most recognizable recordings, with “Identity” regularly resurfacing in highlife tribute content and lyric videos that keep introducing his music, and the Congolese-influenced guitar work that defined it, to new listeners.

“Identity” is an exciting track with captivating energy, impressive delivery, and a memorable sound. Make sure you listen to this impressive song and add it to your playlist today.
